Looking for a serene escape to the Northern Virginia countryside? This historic estate is surrounded by rolling hills, farmland, and quiet country roads, with a small-town charm hard to beat. And that is what makes the boutique Airlie Hotel a perfect destination for relaxation.
Built on a combination of sustainable farming, elegant architecture, charming walkable grounds, and a natural setting in Virginia’s wine country, Airlie Hotel is a perfect haven for those seeking outdoor leisure and recreation. Airlie can also be used as a venue for specific events, such as a business retreat, reunion, romantic getaway, and, of course, a wedding.
I came for a national business retreat over three days, which was plenty of time to acclimate and explore the surrounding area. It was an excellent opportunity to get a breath of fresh air and stretch my legs in a picturesque setting.
Location

The Airlie Hotel is located just an hour outside of busy Washington, D.C., in Warrenton, Virginia. This is a perfect, secluded destination to recharge. You will notice during your drive here that the compacted city life seems to melt away as you pass through more open stretches of fields and hills. Be on the lookout for the abundant wildlife that has made the property part of their natural habitat.
It’s placed on 300 acres of pristine Virginia landscape with groves of trees, shimmering lakes, and farmland heritage to explore by walking or with one of their provided bicycles. With a history spanning over one hundred years and numerous events, it has been recognized by Historic Hotels of America for maintaining its historical significance and authenticity.
Room

Part of the appeal here is the historic, landmarked buildings that have been refurbished for your accommodations. You have the main manor house for check-in and dining. Inside are standard guestrooms. But scattered throughout the property are a pair of rustic cottages that are perfect for multiple guests and offer that cozy charm with modern amenities.
While each of the rooms is spacious, with views of pastures and wooded areas that give off a peaceful aura, they are older. This means you might have to deal with occasional unwanted noises and maintenance issues, but they are infrequent, and the service staff are ready to help so as not to affect your stay here.
Facilities

Berkshire Farm
Focusing on Virginia’s agricultural heritage, the Berkshire Farm uses sustainable practices to harvest seasonal produce for on-site use, community food programs, and the local farmers’ market. Part of the farm’s acreage has been set aside for pasture for free-range cattle and pigs for the guests and the on-site restaurant. You can even place an order and take some home with you after your stay. It’s enjoyable to spend the afternoon on a leisurely walk through the property’s trails.
Harry’s
While you have the standard hotel buffet in the dining hall, Harry’s Restaurant is really where you want to eat during your stay. Their focus is on farm-to-table cuisine, with lunch and dinner in a countryside setting. The Berkshire Farm brings what’s in season directly to the restaurant, which helps determine the menu highlights alongside their standard menu for guests. With farm-to-table here, you won’t want to leave to find better food options.
Once you are done eating, work off what you just ate by enjoying the added Topgolf experience. You can practice your swing in an enclosed suite without leaving the property for one of the nearby golf courses and driving ranges.
Activities

Warrenton
Wanting to get off the property for a bit? Just down the road from the hotel is a small town and the center of the area. It’s got old charm and appeal with a historic district and brick-laid roads on its main street. You can enjoy the mom-and-pop shops or take a self-guided tour of several sites to learn about the town’s local history and its role during the Civil War.
Wine Tours
Since you’re staying in the heart of Virginia’s wine country, there are several nearby boutique vineyards you can sample. Places like Vint Hill Craft Winery and Mediterranean Cellars are family-owned and operated. They will offer relaxed tasting rooms and scenic views of this fast-growing wine region. You will feel a more personalized experience at these locations, as they are less crowded.
Service
While guest experiences vary from person to person, it has been mainly positive, thanks to an attentive and welcoming staff. I had no issues with checking in, having my general requests met, or their follow-ups to ensure my needs were met. The service is slower in the late afternoon and evenings compared to other hotels, but that is only because there is really no need to rush here. Life is slow-paced here, and you will see it reflected in the day-to-day operations during your stay.
Value for Money
Staying in a hotel with historic features and countryside scenery can cost a little more than you might be used to. If you check their website, it’s going to be in the upper mid-range. An average night can cost close to $400 during the peak season, after resort fees and taxes, while slower months can be as low as $300. Unless you are looking to overindulge and treat yourself to this kind of experience, the better option might be to stay in Warrenton and choose a location that best suits your budget.
Overall Rating: 3/5
Conclusion & Recommendation
Airlie Hotel is a retreat destination that gets you away from typical chain hotels. I wouldn’t recommend it for solo travelers or for those on a tight budget. You want to go here with that special someone or for a large gathering. With the blending of natural Virginia beauty and welcoming hospitality, it’s a great location to focus on wellness, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
